There’s nothing better than snuggling into a brand new mattress for the first time. After all, a new mattress can be a great investment in your health and quality of sleep. But have you ever wondered what to do with your old mattress when you’re done with it? Instead of taking it to the dump, why not recycle it?
Earth Day is a chance to remind ourselves how grateful we are for our planet and reaffirm our commitment to taking care of it. For this year’s Earth Day on April 22nd, we’d like to celebrate by providing our customers with some great tips for how they can recycle their old mattress instead of letting it waste away in a landfill. If you’re ready to get rid of your old mattress, try recycling it in one of the following ways.
1. Check your manufacturer’s warranty.
Some manufacturers offer buyback programs. If your old mattress is still under warranty, give the manufacturer a call! They may be able to buy it back and recycle the old mattress materials for you.
2. Donate to a thrift store.
Goodwill, Salvation Army, and other local thrift stores will likely be more than happy to take your old mattress off your hands. They may even offer a program to pick it up from your house! This way you get to recycle your old mattress while knowing it’s going to someone who could really use it.
3. Get in touch with a local shelter or church.
These organizations are almost always collecting supplies they can use to help those in need. It’s an awesome way to ensure your mattress is going to someone in the homeless community who may not have had a comfortable bed in a very long time.
4. Contact a local animal shelter.
Local animal control departments, humane societies, or animal shelters are nearly always accepting supplies to help take care of their animals. Mattresses make a great bed for dogs and cats who need a little comfort in their lives!
5. Post on an online marketplace.
Whether you want to list it for free or ask for a few bucks in exchange, sites like Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist are perfect for offloading furniture you don’t want anymore. Chances are somebody will take that mattress off your hands in a few days.
6. Call your local recycling center.
There are plenty of recycling programs that provide bulk waste collection on certain days of the month or year. Some of them will even come to pick your mattress up for you. Be sure to call and check though, because not all of these programs take mattresses.
7. Use it for a DIY project.
Did you know you can upcycle mattresses and use them as crafting materials? Mattress springs make great planters, mattress frames can be used to build a compost bin or raised garden bed, and the foam padding can easily be turned into cushions or a pet bed!
8. Look up mattress disposal companies near you.
All across the U.S., there are companies that you can schedule to come to your home and pick up your mattress for recycling. 1-800-GOT-JUNK has a tool that’s perfect for finding local recyclers, as does Earth911.
Now that you know how to recycle your old mattress, you’re probably ready to buy a new one! For all your mattress needs, visit The Mattress Capital at any of our North Carolina locations. Our team is ready and waiting to help you decide which mattress is right for you!
